Payday loan companies may operate in all states, but they are not legal in all states. See the link below to the “Payday Loan Consumer Information” page to learn more about your rights in the collection process.
Review your rights under your state’s laws. Armed with the knowledge of your rights in your state, create a game plan to repay the loan, which it sounds like you are starting to do. Learn more about how to negotiate the debt (see the link below).
Contact the creditor and inform them of your plan. Don’t be bullied. Stick to your plan. Do not believe legal advice from collection agents. The legal advice they give is usually incomplete or wrong, and is always self-serving.
Remember that no one has been imprisoned for debt since the Civil War. Threats that you will be arrested for failing to repay a payday loan are empty, and are designed to frighten you into paying immediately.
